Members of REB interested in Utility Scale and Storage options are investigating changing the source of energy used at a 'utility scale' including waste to energy projects; utility scale renewables, battery storage and micro grids. Members are currently:
RESEARCHING and monitoring waste to energy projects; utility scale solar farms; storage batteries; micro-grids; pumped hydro & other options. Of particular interest to member researcher Adrian Howden is Sierra Energy's FastOx(R) Gasification based waste conversion system. Adrian has held a number of discussions with Council staff about the feasibility of establishing a regional waste to energy project in Benalla.
The potential and viability of pumped hydro options which utilise small generators installed in water supply pipes is another option REB is monitoring. Generating clean energy by using the excess pressure that builds up in gravity-fed water pipes between elevated reservoir sources and customers to drive a hydro turbine and generate electricity was discussed recently in "Victoria University engineers tap into a clean source of energy" A publication by the US Department of Energy which considers such options - 'Pumped Storage and Potential Hydropower from Conduits' Report to Congress 2015 - may interest the technically minded.
MONITORING proposals and planning submissions in the community and disseminating information about utility scale initiatives which have synergy with REB's vision and goals.
